Gravimetric control is a common technology used in extrusion to measure
throughput and to keep it constant. With a weighing unit placed on the inlet of
the extruder, the amount of material passing through per unit time is measured
by the loss-in-weight principle. A special controller is responsible for the
refilling of the weighing unit and for deriving the throughput value. Beyond
this, the control takes care of constant throughput of the extruder by
adjusting screw speed.
Besides extruder throughput control, control of weight-per-unit length is
very common in profile and pipe extrusion by adjusting the haul-off speed.
Weight-per-length control can be achieved either by controlling the haul-off
or the extruder speed. Accordingly the other drive is set manually.
